If you are using the Learning Machine learning system, students can add their comments and material to this site as evidence of their growing understanding.  The site, if used consistently, will show progression via charts of activity and outcomes.

Searching for the information you need and managing that information is a key skill in the Information Age.  Students need to explore some of the skills and practise using them with guidance.  Are all search engines the same?  What makes a "good" search engine?

Use some of the student's ideas and examples to flesh out a solid understanding before progressing

Question students about how and why they did what they did.  Check for understanding.

Students need to start thinking about Information compared to data.  Why is some data more important than other data and how does this get determined?

Can they show what algorithms might be used in the searches that they design?

Lesson Structure Possible structure an existing one.
  1. introduce some of the key ways that searches are used and why
  2. take a detailed look at search engines and compare results
  3. group work to work on some of their own ideas
  4. discuss what they have learned and what they can apply
  5. volunteers to share their work and explain how they came to their opinions
  6. highlight next week's focus and issue homework

GoogleYahoo!Ask.comForestle and Bing are popular search-engine websites. Some older services include WebcrawlerLycos, and Alta Vista.

Are visual search engines like TagGalaxy easier to use? (this one is only for images, but interesting).

Try IXQuick search engine nd compare the results.  If they are different from other search engines, why might that be?

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) these days is big business, but does that mean it is objective?  It is quite involved to make it work well.

If it takes this much work, it must cost money and therefore be influenced in some way by money.

Homework Get students to write a short explanation of what makes a good search Students can vary their homework depending on their level of understanding Get students to document their experience on their portfolio system for assessment
