Overall Focus

The focus for this criterion is an understanding of some of the range of services offered by servers in a network.  Most students will use these services, such as file management and email, but perhaps without a better understanding of how they all function.

The focus here can be on e-mail services

Other servers you can explore are listed below.

Students should be allowed to see a network in operation and go to the school's server room if possible to see the hardware in situ for more meaning.

They can discuss with the network team some of the services on offer and some of the issues related to the services.

Students should show that they understand how a basic e-mail server works and some of its key attributes.

If you are using the Learning Machine learning system, students can add their comments and material to this site as evidence of their growing understanding.  The site, if used consistently, will show progression via charts of activity and outcomes.

Students can be shown and discuss in very broad terms about how e-mail servers work and how they control access to these servers with client software.  They should have a basic understanding of e-mail and e-mail clients as well as how they function.

Use some of the student's ideas and examples to flesh out a solid understanding before progressing

Question students about how and why they did what they did.  Check for understanding.

E-mail server graphic Most students will have some kind of e-mail, whether it is a school provided one or their own personal one.  What facilities does the e-mail service offer?  Where and how can they access it and control it.  What do they use it for.  What are the advantages and disadvantages of e-mail over other systems?

Most people who are 30 and over use e-mail, but most people below that age have grown up with other systems and tend to use text messaging or posts on social media sites.  Is e-mail still useful?  What are the protocols for using e-mail: formal or informal?

Homework Get students to write their thoughts about using e-mail and how useful it is to them. Students can vary their homework depending on their level of understanding Get students to document their experience on their portfolio system for assessment
