Students The lesson is suitable for KS3 and KS4 students Since this is a new specification, the lesson is suitable for Year 7 to 9 students and differentiated by outcome  
Overall Focus The focus for this entire block will be in developing a data collection project.  In this session, the focus is looking at the ways that they could extend their work to meet additional needs and ways to build this in to systems. Students should have generated some of this material already as they really will have addressed some of their audience or customer needs, but here they need to investigate additional needs.

Key Questions Some questions to get learners thinking about the topics Students will need to show that they are aware of the needs of people they might be designing for, and in some instances, might need to second guess these people as they may not be aware of the potential available to them via computers, where the students will be. What is the best way to show other people what is possible? What about showing people what is probable, rather than possible?  Do people always know what it is they want or need?  How do you help them in this case?

Students may not have the skills, nor would they be required too for the criterion, to be able to program or develop complex systems to work with awareness.  The example in the Handbook relates to context aware bus stops.  However, they should at least be able to show that they understand that these factors are important and have some idea how they might be addressed, even if they can't carry this out,

If you are using the Learning Machine learning system, students can add their comments and material to this site as evidence of their growing understanding.  The site, if used consistently, will show progression via charts of activity and outcomes.

Students can put together their findings in a blog or portfolio in order to consolidate their ideas to be able to use on other projects.

Use some of the student's ideas and examples to flesh out a solid understanding before progressing

Question students about how and why they did what they did.  Check for understanding.

Portfolio image

Students will have worked on how to meet other people's needs and although not essential, it might be useful to document their ideas and thoughts in the Learning Site or as a blog.  Make sure they understand how to find out people's needs and how to assess how well they have met them.  One key ingredient is feedback.

Homework Get students to complete writing up their thoughts on the importance of needs analysis in designs on their blogs or ePortfolios. Students can vary their homework depending on their level of understanding Get students to document their experience on their portfolio system for assessment
